The market that a commodity exchange opens is called a "commodity market" in the Commodity Derivatives Transaction Act. A commodity exchange opens a commodity market for each listed commodity (goods or electricity) or commodity index. A membership commodity exchange is established under the Act, and a joint-stock commodity exchange is a joint-stock company that has received a license from the competent ministers1.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries states that, as of March 2025, there were two commodity exchanges, the Osaka Dojima Exchange and the Tokyo Commodity Exchange. The Osaka Exchange is a financial instruments exchange that also trades agricultural products, and is called a comprehensive exchange2.
