ISO 20022 does not fix the syntax of messages in detail. It defines a technique and method for organizing the items and meanings of a message from the business flow. The message definitions created for each area, such as payments and securities, are registered in the repository of the registration authority and published1.
It began as the successor to ISO 15022, which was used in securities, and it was established in 2004 as a standard for financial business in general2. SWIFT acts as the registration authority3.
